Online feature on the exhibition “We show what we (don’t) know – images as research”

Die neue Ausgabe von Rosa Mercedes, dem Online-Journal des Harun Farocki Instituts, bietet eine Reflexion über die Ausstellung „We Show What We (Don’t) Know – Images as Research“, die die Klasse für Expanded Cinema im Rahmen der Transcultural Academy „Futures/Futurities“ im Japanischen Palais der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden 2023 produziert hat. Welche Bilder erzeugt die Forschung im Museum? Wie können Bilder selbst Instrumente der Forschung sein? Diesen Fragen ging ein Seminar der Klasse „Expanded Cinema“ an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in Zusammenarbeit mit den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) ein Jahr lang nach. Ausgehend von „Labour in a Single Shot“ von Harun Farocki und Antje Ehmann entstanden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Wissenschaftlern und Forschern der SKD zahlreiche künstlerische Arbeiten, die vom 12. Oktober bis zum 23. November 2023 im Japanischen Palais in Dresden zu sehen waren.

Rosa Mercedes 09 wurde redaktionell von Alma Weizman koordiniert.—-The issue of Rosa Mercedes, the online journal of the Harun Farocki Institut, offers a reflection on the exhibition “We Show What We (Don’t) Know – Images as Research”, that the class for expanded cinema produced within the framework of the Transcultural Academy “Futures/Futurities” at the Japanische Palais of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden 2023.What images does research in the museum produce? How can images themselves be instruments of research? These questions were pursued by a seminar of the “expanded cinema” class at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig in cooperation with the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) over the course of a year. Based on “Labour in a Single Shot” by Harun Farocki and Antje Ehmann, a multitude of artistic works emerged through close exchange with scientists and researchers from the SKD that were on display at the Japanische Palais in Dresden from October 12th through November 23rd, 2023.
