Mikhail Tolmachev ist bildender Künstler, der mit Klanginstallationen, Videos, Fotografien und räumlichen Interventionen arbeitet. In seiner Praxis untersucht er den sich ständig wandelnden Status von Dokumenten, Sammlungen und Museen und die in diesen Feldern politisch bedingte Produktion von Wahrheit und Realität. Er arbeitet oft kollaborativ, mit Schriftstellern, Historikern und Künstlern, um Bruchstellen von Repräsentation zu erforschen und Sehgewohnheiten der Öffentlichkeit zu hinterfragen. Im Vortrag „ Außer Sichtweite – Grenzenüberschreitungen künstlerischer Forschung“ stellt Mikhail Tolmachev seine künstlerische Arbeit vor, insbesondere die Arbeit mit Sammlungen und Museen in politischen, historischen und ideologischen Kontexten. Die Projekte «Außer Sichtweite (Beyond Visual Range)» im Museum der Streitkräfte (Moskau 2014) und «Pakt des Schweigens» im GULAG Geschichtsmuseum in Moskau (2016) hinterfragen Machtverhältnisse und ihre Fiktionen, indem sie die Ausstellungspolitik untersuchen und die Rolle des Museums als soziales Institut, an dem Kuratoren*innen, Verwalter*innen und Publikum teilhaben, beleuchtet.

Tolmachev lebt und arbeitet Leipzig, wo er an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst als Meisterschüler sein Studium abschloss. Mikhail Tolmachev is a visual artist who works with sound installations, videos, photographs and spatial interventions. In his practice, he looks into the constantly evolving status of a document and politically mediated production of truth and reality. He collaborates with writers, historians, and artists to explore fractures of representation and to re-think the conventions of spectatorship.In the lecture “ Beyond Visual Range – Transgressing the Boundaries of Artistic Research“ Mikhail Tolmachev will present his artistic work, especially his work with collections and museums in political, historical and ideological contexts. The projects „Beyond Visual Range“ at the Museum of the Armed Forces (Moscow 2014) and „Pact of Silence“ at the GULAG History Museum in Moscow (2016) question power relations and their fictions by examining exhibition politics and the role of the museum as a social institute in which curators*, administrators* and audiences participate.
Tolmachev lives and works in Leipzig, where he graduated as a Meisterschüler at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst.
